FreshGrade
This weekend, I have sent you all an invitation to join our FreshGrade community. This will be used to communicate your child's learning with you on a more regular basis. I will try my best to give you tips on how to support your child at home when adding an assessment to your child's FreshGrade portfolio. I encourage you to login at least once a week and share your ideas and compliments with your child on their learning. Although alot of their video's will be in French, I encourage you to listen with your child and have them explain their thinking with you. This tool is a three way communication tool between me, you, and your child. The purpose of FreshGrade is to allow your child to see that we are all tools in their learning journey. Please feel free to book an appointment with me to review how to login and participate in your child's FreshGrade account. There is an also an app for all Smart devices. Login to your app store and search freshgrade for parents!
Homework
Please remember that homework will only be assigned if work ihas not been completed during class time. I will not be assigning extra work. Students have been reminded to be practicing their dictée every night in different ways. They are also to read for at least 15 minutes in either French or English.
Dictée
After having multiple discussions with the students, we have decided to have a dictée every two weeks. As the dictée's are quite difficult and students are being asked to develop a deeper understanding of the language, we will use one week to explore the verb conjugations and the following to explore other aspects of the language being explored that week. On the Fridays where we will not be having a dictée, we will have a verb quiz to help them with their efforts when studying. If you have any questions in relation to the decision that we have made as a class, please feel free to contact me.
Math
We continue to explore our mathematical operations and the importance of place value. We will be focusing on multiplication and division over the next month. The grade 4 students have a learning standard of understanding 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication. The grade 5 students are to explore 2-3 digit multiplication by 2-3 digit multiplication. The same learning standards exist for division.
When exploring these concepts, we will also be relating them to how these operations are used in our daily lives. It is important for students to understand how and why they learn math at school. At home, I encourage you to share with your child when you use multiplication and division during your day. Students will be asked to develop strategies that work for them to understand a question. Please ask your child to show you the strategies they are learning at school.
Social Studies
The Canadian election was quite an interesting run! The students participated in Student Vote on October 16th. This happened across Canada. The results of this vote were as follows: Liberals, NDP, Green, Conservative, and Other. As we continue, we will focus in on the Liberal Government and what they will now do for our country. We will be writing letters to our new Prime Minister as part of the conclusion to our study. Stay Tuned for our learning!
Science
Students have explored wind speeds, the water cycle, and cloud types. We will now be completing a project. The first part of our project will be to put together a poster containing all information necessary. Students have been given a criteria sheet that I have attached below. Students are working in pairs or individually as they have chosen the method that is best for their learning.
Another reminder that the week of Remembrance Day will be a short week for students. The BCTF and the Ministry of Education have jointly created a day for teachers (November 12th) to explore the new curriculum that will be fully implemented next year in all Elementary schools. Below is a link for you to explore the curriculum: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/. This day is then followed by a Professional Development Day that had already been scheduled into the school year.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mlle Maharaj
